Teenagers need the reassurance of feeling heard and supported when they reach out for help, and during this tumultuous period may not be as open with their parents or existing adult support system.

The following is not an exhaustive list, but are common issues treated by our therapists:

The teen years are a period of rapid change and growth,

New stressors, family tension, and heightened emotions are common experiences, but sometimes what a teen experiences is outside of what they might deem as “normal adolescent struggles”. During this development, there are four primary aspects that therapy can address:

This is the time for exploration! Teens are examining what they value, re-evaluating relationships with family and peers, and attempting new hobbies. There may be experimentation with different ideas, friends, and activities, which can lead to risky behavior. This experimentation is normal, but it’s not always balanced with thoughtfulness or a cognitive ability to consider the consequences of their actions.

Friends at this stage in a teen’s development will provide a sense of belonging, but also establish their role within various peer groups. These relationships can be healthy, but some teens can find themselves in a peer group that does not respect them or use bullying tactics to assert dominance. This can cause deep feelings of anger, resentment, fear, sadness, and loneliness. Holding on to these emotions can lead to depression, anxiety, avoidance of school, and other social activities. In extreme cases, it can cause suicidal ideation, self-harming behaviors, or a desire to inflict violence on others. This is an issue that can be addressed in therapy with tactics aimed at revising core beliefs about oneself, identifying new social opportunities, and resolving trauma and anger.
Family relationships tend to shift during this period of time, as a normal part of a teen’s evolving identity and developmental stage of life. This can create feelings of loss, anger, confusion, and uncertainty for the teen and their family members as they try to navigate this new stage of life. It may also result in a high level of conflict within the family, resulting in a cycle of conflict/withdrawal that can be very distressing for all involved. Therapy provides a safe space for teens and their family members to express themselves, navigate the evolution of their relationship, and establish healthy connection and boundaries.
Although teens learn to describe basic emotions as children, with age they begin to develop an ability to grasp the depth of their emotions as well as the consequences if they act on emotion alone. When adolescents can recognize how they feel, they can choose how they will react to a situation. If teens are struggling to do this, therapy is an option. In therapy, emotions and their impact can be better clarified. There is an opportunity to eliminate unhelpful coping skills and replace them with healthier approaches.

Teen therapy provides a safe space for adolescents to navigate their challenges, discover their strengths, and develop healthy ways to manage life's ups and downs.
